If you look at our not-so-ancient history:

1. Koreans and Japanese are two branches of the same group. They won't accept that.

2. Pacific islanders came from the Philippines, but Filipino-Americans reject that and claim Filipinos are Pacific islanders.

3. and so on.

Common denominator? Politics.
